Obituary for Bartholomew Joseph Heavey

Bartholomew J. Heavey passed peacefully from the world on Jan. 29, 2023, in his home in Greenwich, CT. He was 91 years old.

Bart was born in Roosky, County Roscommon, Ireland, on Jan. 20, 1932, to Josephine (Armstrong, originally of Greenwich) and James Heavey (of Roscommon). He was one of ten siblings. Bart is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bridget “Debbie” (McLoughlin); children James Heavey (Kia), Debbie Colon (Joel), Michael Heavey (Noreen), and Brian Heavey; grandchildren Michael (Amanda) and Mark Smuda, Dermot, Aidan, and Dierdre Heavey, Anastasia and James Heavey, and Emma Heavey; and great-grandchildren Chloe, Scarlett, and Adam Smuda. He was predeceased by son Martin T. Heavey.

Bart immigrated to Greenwich in the 1950s. He served proudly in the U.S. Army and worked as a milkman before embarking on a long career with the Greenwich Water Co. (now Aquarion). Following retirement, he worked for nearly 20 years at Waterford of Greenwich.

A terrific dad, Bart worked multiple jobs so he and wife Debbie could send all five children to Catholic school. He also found time to support his kids’ interests in Scouting, athletics, and more. Bart was involved with the Roscommon Assoc. of New York and was a strong supporter of GAA (the Gaelic Athletic Association).

Calling hours will be at Castiglione Funeral Home, 544 Old Post Rd. #3, on Friday, Feb. 3 from 4 – 8 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Greenwich Ave. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 11 a.m.
