Obituary for Darling Allison

Dr. Darling Allison (née Darling Lee), age 84, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023. Born in Hong Kong on June 15, 1938 to Professor Lee Lung and Dr. King Yeh June, she was a direct descendent of the Chinese Royal Family.

Dr. Allison completed her medical studies at Oxford University, England, following which she became a surgeon, before later specializing in the field of radiology. She devoted her lifetime to public service, opting to practice in Hong Kong government hospitals over the private arena, with a final 23-year stretch at Kwong Wah Hospital, as Senior Medical Officer and Head of the Department of Radiology.

In her four-plus decade career, Dr. Allison’s capabilities, authenticity and ardent passion for her fellow man, earned her roles in areas far beyond the scope of medicine. In every capacity, she fought fiercely to right wrongs. Whether in advocacy for her patients; to ensure equal rights throughout the hospital ranks; or towards improving community welfare or that of her fellow workers, her first concern was always for the betterment of society.

As an artist and philanthropist, Dr. Allison was equally prominent. Especially fond of the oil medium, she painted prolifically. She perhaps became best known for her portraits, of heads of state and other figures of renown, which in every case, she gifted, donated or auctioned for the benefit of charitable organizations.

Dr. Allison and her husband, Mr. Donald Allison, were also founding members of several charitable organizations of their own - The Foundation for Early Childhood Development; The Hong Kong International Association of Writers, Artists & Academics; and The Hong Kong Junior Golf Association - to name a few.

Dr. Allison is survived by her husband, Donald Allison, their daughter, Carol Allison-Musetti, and pre-deceased by their daughter, Susan Allison.

Services for Dr. Allison will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 10am at St Mary’s Church, 178 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich, CT 06830.
