A lifelong Greenwich resident, Dick attended local schools until high school, where he entered Bordentown Military Institute in Bordentown, New Jersey. He graduated in 1950. After his graduation, he began his time at the University of Bridgeport, playing football and earning the moniker, “Bull Dog.” During his time studying and playing right tackle, he met the love of his life, Mary Rose Pirrello.
In 1952, Dick enlisted in the Army and served in Korea. While in the military he earned the rank of Corporal, before returning home to marry Mary on February 13, 1954.

Throughout his life, Dick was active in the Greenwich community. He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Byram, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. Outside of the church, Dick was an active member of the Byram Veterans Association and served on the RTM.

Professionally, he was an accountant for Globe Slicing Machine Company and the IRS, before opening up his own accounting practice.
Dick was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary of 68 years. He loved big band music and nothing made him happier than dancing with her to “In the Mood.” Spending time with his children and grandchildren gave him no greater pleasure. Through his sense of humor, warmth, openness, and a love of helping people, Dick made an uplifting impact on everyone he met. He lived by his motto, “Always be a good person.”

He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose Whelan, his six children, Peggy of Dunedin, FL, Richard (Susan) of St. Augustine, FL, Patti (Bob) of Cheshire, CT, Robert (Beth) of Wilmington, NY, Joe (Kristin) of Newtown, CT, and Mary (John) of Mission Hills, KS. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Leah (Matt), Paul, Joey, Kris, Jared, Ruby, Ethan, and Mal, and many nieces and nephews who all loved him very much. He is predeceased by his parents Leonard Francis Whelan and Sylvamae Mitchell Whelan.
